History of Nepali Calendars

Hello visitors, Few days ago one of my brother asked me a very intense question , for which i did not know how to reply him at that time , the question was "why do we nepalese celebrate January first as new year according to English calendar , when they don't celebrate our New year , according to Nepalese calendar".
Well , we have seen lots of examples of people from different ethnicity, culture and calendar peoples sharing views and celebrating or even being a part of each others culture. Well my answer may not satisfy you but i would like try once, telling perhaps our calendar is not quite popular and there is no lots of information out there in the web , to satisfy the internet crawler .

Therefore i have searched few details of our calendar , Many of us may be aware , but im sure i'll be able to help someone looking for it out there , because i'm sure i did not know this before .

"History of Nepali Calendars"

Bikram Sambat :
Nepali calendar is the lunisolar Hindu calendar used in Nepal for both Civil and Religious purposes. The year begins in the month of Baishakh usually around 14th April.

The official Nepali calendar follows Bikram Sambat abbreviated  (B.S.) . It is said to have been started by "Mythical Indian Emperor Vikramaditya ".

The Bikram Sambat (B.S.) year is 56.7 years ahead of western/ Gregorian Calendar. The Georgian year 2013 A.D began 17 poush 2069 and ended in 16 poush 2070.

Also , Every month is divided in 2 phases :
  1. Krishna Paksha " Dark fortnight", the 15 days between the full moon and the new moon.
  2. Shukla Paksha " Bright fortnight", the 15days between the new moon and the full moon.

Nepal Sambat :

Nepal sambat is also know an "Nepal Era" and is the national lunar calendar of nepal. It was started on 20 october 879 A.D. and was in widespread use for all daily purpose until the beginning of the 20th century when it came under official disapproval . These days it is used for ceremonial purposes and to determine the dates to celebrate religious festivals and and also to calculate birth dates and death anniversaries.

Nepali sambat is a unique calendar in the sense that all other calendar are named after rulers or religious leaders, Nepal sambat is the only calendar which is named after a country .

The year 2013-2014 A.D. corresponds to 1134 in nepal sambat and 2070-2071 in Bikram sambat calendar .

Well , i hope this post answers few of your queries . if you have any further question , do comment and let me know so that i be able to help you .
